Dental Care is a Critical Component of Your Overall Health
What is dental care and how does one make sure a person's dental care program is proper for one's
overall health and age? A proper dental care program does not only concern the smile but also the teeth, underlying
bone structure and gums. All three need to be healthy and there are check-up and maintenance procedures a
dentist must do at least annually, preferably every six months. The prevention of diseases of the gums and
teeth are the goals of these regular visits to the dentist office. A good dentist will not only clean,
examine and apply fluoride if necessary to their patient's teeth and gums, he/she will give instruction regarding
the proper frequency, techniques and equipment for brushing and flossing.
Dental Problems can be More Serious Than Most People Think.
Once a dental problem advances to the point where the bone structure is involved, the patient is
likely in for a more serious and expensive remedy. The treatment of mouth, gum and teeth diseases may require more
than annual or semi-annual visits. Some of the treatments may take several visits within one or a few
months. Also very important is when teeth need to be repaired or replaced. If a tooth is "beyond
repair" it needs to be replaced or the problem may extend to other teeth and bone. Some dentists eventually come to
the conclusion that many or all teeth need to be removed and replaced with dentures or bridges. These usually
are very expensive and uncomfortable procedures. Dental problems can lead to infections that progress to other
organs in the body...even the brain. There is new medical evidence suggesting that gum inflammations are a
contributor and may even trigger the coronary heart disease process.
Why Dental Care is Neglected.
A large part of the population in this and other countries are either too lazy or not well educated
about the importance of good dental care as it relates to their general overall health. Many younger people are
susceptible to dental care complacency just because they have not had a serious problem yet or because their
parents are not good stewards of their dental health. Sadly dental care neglect is also caused, not because of
laziness or neglect, but because of finances. Correct dental care can be expensive. Fortunately there are
measures one can take to manage the cost of proper dental care. There are dental insurance policies offered through
employee health benefit programs. If these are not available, there are individual and family dental insurance
policies. Lastly, there are dental discount plans offering discounts to a
dentists normal fee schedule of up to 60%. Dental care info.
